What is the definition of Sales?

 What is Sales?

The dictionary meaning of Sales is the exchange of products, services, or assets for money to businesses or consumers. However, the in-depth meaning of Sales is not only to provide customers with the products they require. It refers to providing value to the customers.

Types of Sales: We have two primary types of Sales:

B2B – Business to Business

B2C – Business to Consumer

1. Business to Business (B2B) sales involves sales that occur between two businesses. In other words, here companies or salespeople sell their products or services to another business. The B2B sales are quite complex as the product/service sold here makes a direct impact on the buyer’s business and product value. Companies such as Salesforce, and IBM Watson sell their products to other businesses that come under B2B.

2. Business to Consumer (B2C) model involves selling products or services directly to the end user who is going to use the product or services. It is also sometimes referred to as retail sales as here business sells directly to individual consumers. The revenue generated per customer here may be less in value but here the number of deals may be large in number with a variety of consumers. A very famous example of B2C sales is Netflix, amazon prime, and other OTT platforms.

We do have three other categories of Sales:

Enterprise Sales: These are a type of B2B sales that are complex. The target businesses are large companies and the order size here is quite large. Enterprise Sales generate huge revenue for the seller.

SaaS Sales: SaaS refers to Software as a Service. Any kind of software that is hosted by one provider or a company and sold further to other businesses or consumers is called a SaaS sale.

Direct Sales: Direct Sales refers to selling products directly to the consumer. Direct Sales can be in the form of Single-level marketing or multi-level marketing.
